My wife just got this knife for me as an early Chrismas gift and I have been dealing with knives of diffrent shapes and sizes for diffrent uses and I find that this knife is great for survival or for fighting and I usually carry eather a Pistol, Knife or both where ever I go and I do carry a go bag and this will surly be a welcomed to my B.O.B. when I travel here in my state. Thank You Ka-Bar for this wonderful knife!
This knife is beautiful. I love the size, shape of the blade, handle and it's a pleasure to look at and hold. I wish I only had good things to say about it. I have problems with the black coating and blade finish. It's thick and quickly gums up my sharpening stones. I had to spend time with sand-paper to remove the finish along half the blade. I found the edge to be uneven, with dips in the surface and striations from not being polished after it was milled from a machine. It makes me feel like sacrificed quality by cheaply and quickly finishing the knife in black plastic. I also feel the blade should be thicker and heavier. It's rather light-weight for a camp knife and the bevel on the back of the blade isn't needed. There's other knives with higher quality steel, thicker blades and better finishes for less money. They might not be as pretty, but I'm disappointed that I purchased this knife instead.
I just got this knife, and am finding her a great knife, fit and finish is excellent, and the blade shape facilitates slicing, can't wait to field test her. This definitely won't be the last KaBar I will be getting.
Bought this knife as a pig sticker and have found it to be excellent in handling. Its light weight but strong enough to cut into to pigs throat. It keep its edge on ever hunt. I have found it to be a little hard to sharpen. Not good as a skinning knife but great for all around field butchering. good to use around camp site as well..
Great knife I would call this knife a definite fighting knife and Becker's version of CRKT Shinbu and cold steels Tantos. Great knife, for the spec operator martial artist etc... Ka-bar and Mr Becker maybe on to a great fighting knife series here. This combined with the BK-9 and a smaller Becker your set for any situation life may present you.
I am going to take this knife to the Brazilian jungle and then I will write a better review. So far I like the way it handles!! I would do only two small improvements that would make this bk5 the knife to take anywhere in the world!
Excellent size for EDC in the field or hunting. Very good knife. The standard Becker grip is smallish and very slippery. The grip upgrade is $44+. I vote for the standard Kabar grip material enlarged to fit the Beckers.
Ethan Becker is a man after our own heart. An avid outdoorsman who enjoys martial arts and hunting, Becker founded Becker Knife and Tool Corporation in the early 1980's to design the industrial-strength tactical and survival knives he'd always wanted for himself. What we love about Becker, other than his innovative designs, is that he spends so much time in the outdoors testing new equipment and designs. KA-BAR is proud to be the manufacturer of Becker's five best-selling models - all introduced this year and brought up to date and approved by Becker himself.
