I got the BK4 for my birthday and what a great gift. Very sharp, very sturdy and extremely well built. The shape is very well designed and the weight and blade angle is perfect for bushwacking. Sheath has a belt loop and a separate pocket with cover that holds a sharping stone that I purchased.
One of the best knives I own, I would highly recommend it. The design makes it a good chopper for the size. It's plenty big enough for a primary knife.
This has been my main use knife for a while now, I will continue to use it, it has become my favorite mid size knife. It can handle anything a heavy duty knife can be used for.
What a great knife. The instant you will hold it in your hand you will know all of it. I will have this one for a very long time.
I have had my BK4 for about 2 months. I have put it through the ringer. I duck hunt every day I can through the season and build a lot of makeshift blinds out of river reeds with a machete. I turkey hunt some too and build blinds out of small limbs and saplings with a hatchet. I wanted to try a large knife for backpacking/camping when I come across the BK4 and when I read about it was a cross between a machete and a hatchet I drove strait to Smokie Mountain Knife Works and bought one. Not dissapointed. I thought when I first saw it that the handle was at a wierd angle but its perfect, it puts the most power at the end of the stroke. The ballance is dead on for what the knife is purposed for. Its a great chopper a great slasher and is a very good draw knife too. The 1095 cro van is good stuff, holds a good edge and isnt hard the sharpen. It shines at batoning too. The blade is long enuff to hit when splitting dead center on a 6" piece of wood and it rides right in the thinnest curved part of the blade so it doesn't have much drag even with the coating. The ONLY con is the handle that comes on it is kinda slick, slide a piece of innertube on it and your good to go. However it is one of the most comfortable hadles ever made. Love it. Paired up with the BK16 and you would be set up for any kind of wood craft imaginable. Very versitile knife indeed. The only reason I'm giving it 5 stars is because 7 (the number of perfection) wasn't an option. Well done Uncle Ethan!
I've had this knife for awhile now and used it alot. It's very easy to use and maintain. Great for outdoor activities and carried it when mountain biking and hiking and the blade easily goes through most of what you need it to. Haven't tried it to chop wood but I'm confident that it'll do the job well seeing that I've used one of my other Ka-bar's to chop wood. Only drawback is that the handle is slick when I wish it was textured so I won't loose my grip when either I've got sweaty hands or in wet conditions. But otherwise a superb knife and I look forward to owning more.
I really like this knife! So much so that despite how badly I want to get a real kukri, this has given me reason not to. I'll start with the pros and then cons. Pros: 1095 cro-van steel is awesome! I put a convex edge on this right out of the box and I've used it pretty hard on several trips and I still don't feel I need to resharpen it yet. It has held it's edge very well! Blade length is also very comfortable to do light chopping but because the steel is so good and the blade so short you really can do feather sticks and finer carving pretty well with it. The thickness of the blade has been suitable for the demands I've put it through. I like the fact that it's not a huge beast like most kukris but it can still handle some abuse. The handle feels really good in the hands, maybe consider putting bicycle inner tube on it to give a little more grip. The weight is very good as well for a chopping based tool. I take this when I don't want the weight of my hunters axe. The sheath is nice, the extra slot for a smaller blade is useful and the accessory pouch is big enough to hold a basic fire kit. Cons: the tip is pretty useless! It doesn't look that broad, but I've sharpened the blade to hair popping sharp and I couldn't poke the tip through a 55gal trash bag! That is the one thing I can't stand about this knife. For that reason a smaller knife with a better point really is needed if you plan on doing any kind of drilling or "stabbing" like work with it. It does require some technique and a lanyard really is a necessity for it and actually makes the technique easier to use and makes the tool more effective. I think this is a really good, one tool option. Just make sure to get a lanyard on it and get a feel for it and practice.
