It's difficult to grasp what an unthinkable value the Cutlass is. This knife is a true workhorse that combines wonderful form with amazing performance. The handle is utterly dependable for maintaining a solid grip, and the pommel design allows for a monkey-fist hold should you so desire (although the Cutlass overall design performs best with the hand kept in the standard position). The extra forward blade weight from the recurve shape brings a lot of forward chopping power, and the hollow grind provides a deep bite while also keeping the weight down. Once you can get the hang of consistently hitting the very wide sweet spot, this knife can cut through very thick material. All of this at a price that's ridiculously low. I have beat the ever-lovin' heck out of my Cutlass and it just keeps coming back for more.
I purchased this "Machete" (I consider it a large knife if any thing) a while back, I got to say this thing has been simply amazing. I am really big into bush craft survival, with that I need a good fixed blade, so far this thing has been a work horse like no other, taking the abuse that most fixed blades could not handle, biggest thing I have used this on was a one foot thick oak tree, it took me about 15 mins, but I was able to cut it down. The sheath that comes along with it is not the best, I have seen sheaths with a lot less craftsmanship, in the end I did not buy this for a sheath, I bought it for an amazing blade, which I would of gladly pay twice for what I did. I am getting ready to buy three more of these, all gifts to my father, and two brothers.
Awesome item, heavy front gives it good momentum and the hook end of the handle eliminates any slipping while swinging. This replaced my hatchet after working so well. I cut wood and bone (hunting) regularly.
I am a huge outdoorsman. This knife I have used for several years as my choice of carry knifes when I would venture into the woods of the sierra Nevadas. It has performed flawlessly for many chores. Chopping is a chore made easy with this beast. It's also.small enough to use as a camp knife. I have performed many cutting chores with it. The quality is impeccable. It stays sharp for many days of use. I rarely need to sharpen when I'm in the field. It's nice to be able to not have to sharpen till you get home. The grip on this knife is very friendly to the user. It allows you to work for a long time without fatigue. Also it does not slip when your hands are wet. This is a great value at its low cost. A must have.
As a wilderness instructor I depend on the items I carry. My Cutlass goes with me on all of my outdoor classes and trips. From batoning wood and chopping branches to cutting potatoes for dinner it has never let me down. The forward belly of the blade really makes a difference, and the handle is nice and full which helps with maintaining a good grip. Not a machete and not a knife, this tool is in a league of its own...Great work, Ka-Bar.
I have had this knife for several years now and it is my "go to" heavy duty knife. It can handle clearing campsites, cutting paths, cutting down small trees / limbs, splitting wood for kindling with ease. The ergonomics are great, it fits my hand perfectly, and the distribution of the weight gives you a very efficient cutting action when you swing it, making it easy to use for long periods of leading trail. The only thing I would point out is that i had over sharpened it at one point and the edge did pit and get dinged by some heavy use - nothing alarming but a reminder that this blade doesn't need to be razor sharp to be hugely effective, the power comes from the weight and the swing. Keep another Ka Bar knife to shave with!!
All I can add to what the other reviews have said is that the cutlass is like a camp axe with the functional abilities of a large knife. I remember when I first saw it, while looking for a good machete, I thought, what the hell is that supposed to do, but once I had it in my hands I knew that this blade meant business, and it's a rock. It's hard to accept the fact that I may not need another machete for several more years and I've had my cutlass for about 3, already.
I would have called it a Philippine Bolo. Ii lives on my front passenger seat as my manually operated anti-carjacking system.
This blade has gone through so much yet it still holds strong. I have hacked my way through just about everything with this knife. the broad blade allows for precise and detailed work and the length and width lets it chop down trees with ease. People seem to dislike the sheath at times however i find it ti be practical and effective as well as aesthetically pleasing due to the leather. Great knife! Definitely a must have for anyone who needs a flawless tool for nearly any purpose imaginable.
