TDI/Hinderer Hell Fire

The TDI/Hinderer knives are design collaborations between Tactical Defense Institute President and Chief Instructor, John Benner, and custom knife maker, Rick Hinderer, owner of Hinderer Knives. Based on their combined experiences as a veteran police Lieutenant and Fire Fighter/EMT, John Benner and Rick Hinderer have designed knives for real-world emergency situations--sure when gripped and ambidextrous for a multitude of mounting and application options. The Hell Fire features a recurve Tanto blade. Locking hard plastic sheath and reversible black metal belt clip (1480CLIP) included. Fits maximum height of 1.75", width of 1.25" and thickness of 0.25".

  - I received this knife from Ka-Bar as an exchange for another knife in the TDI line up that didn't "cut it." The knife is an Ohio designed, U.S. made, full-tang tanto. It is carried on the off hand side primarily as a handgun retention aid and extreme close quarters "last ditch" backup weapon. The ergonomics of the knife are excellent. It's beefy design instills confidence. The retention device is great - the only down side to that is you must take a forward grip on the knife drawing from the sheath, as if you acquire a reverse grip, you can't hit the release button. This knife would easily be a "five star" rating, but the clip for the sheath is weak and easily let's go. I replaced it with a Tech Lock and now have an almost "perfect" set up. Kudos to Ka-Bar, TDI and Rick Hinderer for making an excellent American-built product.

  - I like the shape, feel of this fixed blade knife. I hope to use this on my duty vest and especially like the locking sheath. I am extremely disappointed with the grind of the blade. It looks like 60 grit sandpaper for the finish. Overall I am not sure I will keep this knife. I can not recommend this $92 Ka-bar to others in law enforcement when it was not sharpened professionally.

  - The TDI/Hinderer Hell Fire is a unique blade. The steel is good as it holds and edge and takes an edge fairly quickly if you are patient and do it right. I'm giving this knife 5 stars because the knife absolutely deserves it. The sheath has a retention kinda/sorta similar to a Safariland holster. Similar in that you use your thumb to release the lock as with the Safariland ALS. If you practice knife draws and tactics like you dry-fire, then you'll find the sheaths locking system is pretty dang good. The only area of improvement I can see for this knife is the attachment system. It uses a belt clip that can be used on either side, but you can't set the attachment system to run the sheath horizontally, aligned with your belt. Low vis and easy to access. I suspect I'll find a way to rig the knife to run it horizontally, but it would be knice if the knife (get that?) Ka-Bar took care of this. I would not hesitate to purchase this knife again. My friends and especially my son are always eyeballing it.

  - I recieved the knife yesterday. I like it. Nice sheath, I like the fa t thst it is retained. I switched it to left hand carry. As I read in another review I found no problem with the belt clip. Stays securely on the belt during draw and normal wear. No trouble with using the release, drawing or positioning the blade in saber or feverse grip after s little practice. This is a great back up to a pistol. It would also make a pretty good EDC.

  - I live in North East Ohio, so I love that this knife was designed in Ohio and is Made In The USA! It's a heavy duty, no holds barred, full-tang recurve "tanto" (a Kamasu-Kissaki style tip), style blade that is razor sharp right out of the box and will do exactly what it's designed to do, and so much more. I carry it on off hand side primarily as a handgun retention aid, that is, maintaining control of a handgun while it is holstered and while it is in the hand. I also use it as an off hand close quarters self defense tool and general purpose EDC knife. It's comfortable to wear and easy to conceal, both ideal attributes of an EDC knife. The ergonomics of the handle are excellent, aiding in easy and accurate indexing resulting in powerful pressure cuts, fast short distance and full arms length cuts, pushing, stabbing, jabbing, twisting and prying, all capable in both a forward and reverse grip. The recessed thumb jimping on the spine is ideal and just adds to its favorable grip, both forward and reverse. The pommel tapers to a round, blunt point and can easily be used to function similarly to a Kubotan, to inflict painfully effective techniques on pressure points. There's really no part of the knife that can't be used in some way or another. It's hefty design is practical and feels great in the hands. The retention device on the sheath is superb, easy to use and with a little practice can be manipulated to release the knife using a reverse grip. The sheath itself is a top of the line, solid design and fits around the blade nicely. The clip for the sheath serves its purpose perfectly whether it's worn with or without a belt and even secures the knife nicely on a boot and even thin pajama type pants. There is a tab on the inside of the clip that prevents the sheath from being pulled from a belt or waistband in the event that someone tries to take it from you. It can be removed from the sheath via the 4 screws and repositioned to carry the knife right side up vertically, upside down vertically or horizontally. It is also ambidextrous. All in all, the Ka-Bar TDI Hellfire is a knife I can use with confidence and I applaud the collaboration of Ka-Bar, TDI President and Chief Instructor, John Benner and custom knife maker and owner of Hinderer knives, Rick Hinderer for making such a practical, high quality American designed and built product that is available to everyone.
