Ek Model 4

KA-BAR is excited to introduce its first and much anticipated John Ek Commando Knife Co. product, the Ek Model 4. This updated version of the old jungle fighting knife is made from 1095 Cro-Van and features a parkerized blade, textured glass filled nylon handles and traditional X-head fasteners. A US-made Celcon® sheath with retaining strap, self-locking function and multiple tie-down points is also included.   - I purchased this knife simple due to the fact that I loved the design. I'm not a huge knife collector or expert, but this knife feels very solid in your hand. The sheath Is very tough and has a design to keep your knife retained within very securely. The EK 44 has a price that surprised me. The design and quality are at a great value.

  - This is a quickie overview I wrote and submitted on BushCraft.com website. I hope you don't mind me including it here. I received my KA-BAR John Ek Commando Knife Model 4 (EK44). I'm really happy with the overall fit and finish of the knife. The blade style is a 'double-edged spear point', with some kind of black parkerized coating. I don't know if it is Mil-Spec? Since this knife will be a 'Safe Queen' I'll never personally know how the coating will hold up, but it looks like it is as good or better than a lot I've seen. All grind lines and bevels are straight and symmetrical. The blade is sharp. Seams between the S-Guard and Ricasso are tight. What impressed me right out of the box is the knife is the overall heft. It's solid and substantial. The handle material is glass-filled nylon in the traditional Ek style and attached with very sturdy Ek 'X-Head' bolts. As I said, fit is excellent, I can't find a gap between the scales and the full-tang. The knife feels good in the hand. Have I mentioned this it's built like a tank? I want to mention the sheath that comes with the knife. I've seen very nice knives that come with a sheath that looks like it's an afterthought. This is not the case with the Model 4. The sheath is made from Celcon. I have know idea what it is, but it appears to be an industrial-strength plastic. With two securing features, a strap and cross-guard friction lock, it appears ready for deployment. Including jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. There are enough built-in tie-down points (5 on each side) and three more up by the the belt-loop, finding a spot on your web gear will not be a problem. It has a thick nylon belt-loop, securely sewn and riveted to the to the 'self-locking feature. It's a very well-made sheath. If KA-BAR maintains this level of quality, the Model 5 'Bowie' will be an enormous hit. I don't have particularly big hands. So, I thought the size relationship between the blade and the handle was an optical illusion. There seemed to be a lot of 'handle' hanging out past my hand. I had to break out the old calibrated 20' Sears tape measure. The blade is 6-1/2" in length. The handle/full-length tang is 5-31/32". Let's call it 6-inches. That's only 1/2" difference. I did some research and looked at pictures of earlier reissues and original Ek knives. It seems these proportions are consistent throughout the entire Ek knife family. While looking at the knife, it dawned on me it has a serious 'skull Crusher/Butt/Pommel'. Three quarter inch, 3/16" thick. Whether you're prying up a box lid or getting someone's attention by gently tapping them gently on the temple, it will do the job. It's a serious piece of hardened steel. That adds additional length to the handle length. Regardless, you have lots of real estate to find your favorite grip. I'm a big fan of Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knives. I think they're one of the most beautiful knife designs ever made. But, it has weaknesses. Specifically, a weak Ricasso. The other weakness is a narrow tang. Which contributes to the weak Ricasso. This is not an issue you will have with the KA-BAR/John Ek reissue. The 3/16" thick blade is almost full profile all the way to the point. With the added benefit of the full-length tang, it's one very strong design. Looking at the the edge of the blade from the side and following it to the tip it resembles a chisel-point blade. Given a proper heat-treat and no anomalies in the steel, it would take a lot to break this knife. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
